An Interesting Microsoft Product

Microsoft just announced a new "coffee-table" PC called "Surface" - that is an actual coffee table. The table top is a screen that is touch sensitive and also responds to bar codes on products. It seems that T-Mobile likes them enough to order some for their retail stores - at between $5000 and $10,000 per table. Microsoft will have a limited number of software applications to go with the table.

Here's an article that also has some embedded videos of the table in use:

Microsoft Surface brings computing to the table
Self-contained unit works without mouse, keyboard

One of Microsoft Corp.'s biggest secrets looks like a normal coffee table. Until it's switched on.

Here's a video from Popular Mechanics that shows the Surface computer as well as Jeff Han's wall sized version.

Michael we are similarly impressed with both Han's and MSofts new technologies. see Thoughts Illustrated: Microsoft Surface - a new way of staying in touch

while I believe they serve different application uses, the enabling power of being able to touch the display and manipulate digital objects on it is really goingto change the way we work.

I am intrigued by the neat capability of Surface's ability to recognize device id's and bluetooth communication with other digital devices such as cell phones and PDA'S.

Great coffee table for the house or office n'cest pas?

Dave,

I think you are right about the intriguing nature of the physical objects interacting with the virtual objects. The demo the show is cool - transferring photos without any interface other than dragging onto the object. I think the number and uses of physical/virtual interactions will be beyond what we can imagine now.
